In the last 39 years, the number of people who haven’t been exposed to a single book in a year has tripled. Nearly one-quarter of American adults haven’t opened a book, listened to an audiobook, or pulled up a book on their mobile device in 12 months or more. Why? Many people are looking for experiences rather than the wisdom and knowledge that comes with reading.
I’ve always believed there’s great value in learning; King Solomon wrote in Proverbs that we could do more than just live — we can ‘live!” …. thats LIVE…. with an exclamation point. You can live with an exclamation point if you follow his advice in Proverbs 7:2-4.
“Obey my commands and live!
Guard my instructions as your guard your own eyes.
Tie them on your fingers as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.
Love wisdom like a sister;
make insight a beloved member of your family.”
- Protect God’s Instructions: Time: Most people don’t want to have their meal times or sleep times disrupted or disturbed. When you feel tired or hungry, you know why you can be so protective of those time. Do you feel the same way about your studying and instruction time? To live with an exclamation point, we need to be just as diligent in protecting the time we dedicate to studying and learning.
- Tie these instructions on our fingers as a reminder. Teaching, wisdom, and knowledge should be a priority, and we should put them in places where we will continually remember them. Whether that means we put reminders on our phone, subscribe for e-mailed devotionals, take a Udemy course, or sign up for a one-year Bible reading plan with daily passages, we need to find a way to learn and grow that we will do every day.
- Write God’s commands on your heart.. When we commit to reading the Bible and learning from God’s Word, we’ll find verses that impact us. These are the ones we need to hide deep in our heart so that when we find ourselves in tough situations, we can respond to God’s Word before our own.
- Love God’s Word like family: From a relationship with God to a relationship with others, God places a high value on our relationships. They’re about more than emotion. They are about commitment, faithfulness, and consistency. When we love wisdom like a sister and make common sense our closest friend, we are placing value and giving valuable time to wisdom and knowledge, making them important parts of our lives.
Our time on earth is short — we can choose to live, or we can decide to live! God’s given us the instruction manual for eternal life and life on earth, and if we follow His guidance, wisdom, knowledge and learning, we can do both. We can “live!” while we are living.
