How do you grow a team of people that want to stay with you?
When you lead a team in any capacity, motivation is everything. The leaders motivation is one of the main root causes of a teams long term success or failure.
I’ve seen two people use the same leadership strategies and methods with very different results. The difference is always in their motivation.
Motivation to “get things done” is real but if it is your core motivation, then it is short sided and damaging to your people.
Don’t get me wrong; we should get things done, focusing on the best results with the least effort (effective and efficient). However, there is a deeper motivation that must exist if you want your team to stay with you and develop over the years.
Love of people and dedication to the growth of your team must be your deepest motivation. It’s the long term answer to ministry longevity. This is a hard question that we must dig deep to answer. It’s easy to bark out the “correct” answer, but I see people sacrifice development opportunities all the time to take back a project to get it perfect. Do you want better short term results over long term followers?
There are plenty of times that I compromise on short-term results to develop people for the long term. Why? Two reasons.
1. I love people more than results. I want them both, and will have them both. However, it is important for me to know what my priorities are. If I have to compromise developing people for a short time to make sure I have the results I need, I know it is only short term, and people are more important.
2. I’m thinking long term people investment over short term “out of the park” execution. Once again I want and will have them both, but if things get sideways, I have to prioritize one over the other. I pick growing my people every time.
Examine your leadership style and remember past projects. Dig down deep and think about your motivations when things got behind, or weren’t turning out how you wanted. What is your core motivation in the hard times? People development or execution in spite of being your people.
