Finding your purpose is something most people struggle with.
Paul was nearing the end of his life, when he wrote this to Timothy, his son in the faith.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith,”
2 Timothy 4:7
Paul knew his race well enough to say that he had finished. He knew he had won his fight. He knew his purpose and destination had been reached.
Do you know where your finish line is? Most of us are just worried about finishing each day’s individual races:
- go to work
- make dinner
- drive the kids around
- complete the home project.
These small, monotonous races consume so much time, and must be done so quickly, that there is little time left over for most people to actually consider where they are going or what they were called to accomplish.
If your life were to end today, would you be able to speak with the same confidence Paul had when he wrote to Timothy? Paul knew what he had accomplished in his life, and knew that he was victorious at it. He knew where he was going, he knew what he’d done to get there, and his finish line was clearly marked and set out for him. What about you and I? Most of us are just living for today, trying to make it through our mini-races without losing our minds.
Paul was given a tremendous, bold task from God. You and I have them, too. Maybe He is calling us to greater things? Think about what your life would look like if you had no limitations. What kind of a parent, spouse, friend, employer or even employee do you dream of being? What kind of Christian do you want to be?
The Secret to finding your purpose is to realize that your destination isn’t a project, location, accomplishment, or bank balance. Your destination is a person. You! Your destination is to be WHO God created you to be and knows you are. The secret is to stop trying to discover what you should do and do everything you can to be who God called you to be. If we become WHO God called us to be, we will do WHAT God calls us to do.
