Knowing your life’s destination is one of the things that is the most important and yet most struggled with aspects of life. First is to know where you are. (Check out this post on The Secret to Finding Your Purpose)
Once you know where you are, and you’ve got a dream about where you want to be, you’ll be able to set your destination. God’s Word, the nature of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit dwelling in you will make finding — and reaching — that destination easy.
Achieving these goals and reaching your goal is not always as spiritual as you would think. The main reason people don’t set goals is fear. The fear of failure, to be exact.
Habakkuk 2:2 says,
“Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.”
Do you know your destination?
If so – have you written it down? Write it down on paper. Write it everywhere. Leave copies of your destination all over your house, your office, as your phone wallpaper and lock screen. Remind yourself, repeatedly, of who you are supposed to be.
The next question that pops in your mind is the key. How do you get there? I know you don’t always know all of the next steps, but what are the first two or three? What are the next two that follow? Start with what you know, and set goals along the way, so you know where you’re headed.
Do You Have Clear Goals?
Many people join gyms with no clear goals. They aren’t sure why they’re there but know they are supposed to be there. Church can be the same way. People who just go to services because they are supposed to, with no clear goals to improve themselves, will start fading.
You’ll always miss every goal you don’t set. Start by recognizing where you are, and identifying where and who God wants you to be. That is your first step — and your journey of intentional living will automatically follow.
What Gets Measured, Gets Managed.
They say that people who write down what they are eating automatically lose weight, even when they aren’t trying. This is because they now know at what point they find themselves, rather than wondering about their health and diet.
Our lives are the same way. We spend so much time wondering about what life is throwing at us and figuring out how to manage those situations, which we don’t spend enough time wondering and dreaming about who God has called us to be.
He won’t leave you hanging. Once you’ve discovered His plan for your life, God will naturally give you the next steps. You’ll start raising the bar and setting goals to become the parent, spouse, business owner, employee and person God has called you to be.
